We’re Donating 20% to Breast Cancer Foundations http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/08/surviving-breast-cancer-and-giving-back-one-womans-journey/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/08/surviving-breast-cancer-and-giving-back-one-womans-journey/#comments Thu, 08 Oct 2009 21:46:17 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=442 Only a breast cancer survivor could fully understand the day to day needs of someone who is undergoing treatment for cancer, someone who is too sick to go to work or watch her children and needs financial support during this crucial time. That’s why Sandy B. Muller created a foundation to help women in her Miami/Dade County community pay for these daily expenses. “You become part of a sisterhood you never wanted to be part of and you just help your sister along her journey,” says Muller, who launched the Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation in April, 2008. She says, “I thought, ‘what would I have done if I didn’t have my family to help me out?’ ” Sandy’s foundation is run completely by volunteers so all the money that is raised goes to the women who need it. From October through the end of December, Neroli Rose is donating 20% of sales to the Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation and Sharsheret, a Teaneck, N.J. based breast cancer foundation created in 2001. Let’s help our sisters along.

20 Ways to Diminish Your Risk for Breast Cancer http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/05/20-ways-to-diminish-your-risk-for-breast-cancer/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/05/20-ways-to-diminish-your-risk-for-breast-cancer/#comments Tue, 06 Oct 2009 01:00:12 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=433 Recent studies suggest there is a link between breast cancer and chemicals found in commonly used beauty products for our hair, bodies and skin. Mammary cells are particularly vulnerable to these chemicals, including preservatives known as parabens—ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben, which tend to lodge in the fatty tissue in our bodies. These chemicals, along with many others, mimic the body’s natural hormones, disrupting our endocrine system.

Researchers believe that people who develop breast cancer are more susceptible to a complex interplay of factors, including radiation and chemicals that copy natural estrogen in the body. Only a small number of women who develop breast cancer have inherited the genes for cancer.

In addition to getting yearly mammograms, regular exercise and eating a balanced diet high in grains and organic fruits and vegetables, experts recommend 20 ways to diminish your risk for developing breast cancer. One way is to familiarize yourself with harmful ingredients in body care products so you’ll know what to avoid. Other suggestions include cooking with stainless steel pots and pans and avoiding many commonly used lawn care weed killers. For more information, click here.

Lead on Your Lips http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/lead-on-your-lips/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/lead-on-your-lips/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 20:09:20 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=414 Would you use lipstick that contained lead? Probably not. Lead in your bloodstream is not safe at any level, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Yet, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently found high levels of lead in all 20 lipsticks it tested. Three popular brands had the highest levels, but the FDA won’t name them.

“Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as lowered IQ, reduced school performance and increased aggression,” says Dr. Sean Palfrey, a professor or pediatrics and public health at Boston University and the medical director of Boston’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. “Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development.”

We know that what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream. Multiply that by the amount of times women reapply their lipstick and there’s cause for concern. Scientists say lead builds up in the body, causing significant levels of exposure.

The consumer advocacy group, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), first sounded the alarm about lead in lipstick in 2007, when it conducted an independent test that found the toxin in several brands it tested. The FDA’s most recent findings revealed that these lead levels are actually higher than the CSC originally reported. In response to the FDA’s recent findings, CSC says it cannot make any recommendations about lipsticks to use.

Lead appears to be a byproduct produced by certain colorants in lipstick. It is not an actual ingredient, so it’s not something you can check for by reading a list of ingredients on the labels. In 2007, CSC listed three brands whose products had the highest levels of lead—L’Oreal, Maybelline and Cover Girl. Until further details are made clear, CSC suggests that women wear lipstick only on special occasions and that pregnant women and young girls be particularly careful about using it.

What is Aromatherapy? http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/what-is-aromatherapy/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/what-is-aromatherapy/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 18:43:33 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=410 Aromatherapy is a 5,000 year-old system of healing that uses the essences of plants or essential oils. These oils are chemical compounds that are essential to the life and function of plants—they protect them from predatory animals, the weather and other environmental threats, which is why they are so potent. The compounds in essential oils are very small and complex—smaller than those in pharmaceuticals—which enable them to pass through the skin and through the lungs into the bloodstream quickly. When inhaled, they stimulate the limbic system of the brain that influences emotions and memory.

The therapeutic value of essential oils lies in their purity. Most of what is on the market is synthetic and without any therapeutic value. But pure oils have significant value. Many have been studied in university laboratories around the world. Citrus oils such as orange, lemon and lime have been shown to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Cinnamon and clove oils can kill strep and staph on contact. Lavender has been shown to regenerate tissue.

Neroli Rose relies on this body of data—both scientific and anecdotal to guide us in the formulation of products. We use only therapeutic-grade oils that are extracted from plants that are organically or ethically grown. In addition to using essential oils, Neroli Rose uses a rare and exceptionally hydrating shea butter from Southern Sudan. This shea butter is handmade, using an ancient cold-pressed method that preserves the many vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants found in it. Shea butter, called “lulu,” is a food staple for the Sudanese people and is regarded as life preserving and affirming—new babies are anointed with it.

Scientists hired by the Lulu Life Cooperative based in Nairobi, Kenya have studied our Sudanese shea butter and have documented it nutritional value.

We believe the combination of Sudanese shea butter and therapeutic–grade essential oils make up the finest all-natural moisturizers in the world. They are virtually the only creamy, moisturizing and healing skin care products made without any petrochemicals, water or alcohol.

Our S-Cream for Stretch Marks and Scars, for example, contains many ingredients that heal and regenerate the skin—sea buckthorn oil, rosehip seed oil, mandarin and myrrh. In aromatherapy, these oils comprise a potent synergistic blend. The shea butter, high in Vitamin A is also exceptionally healing to the skin.

Crisp and Clean Hand Cream contains grapefruit, bergamot, geranium and sandalwood oils that are anti bacterial. Grapefruit also has an uplifting aroma, which has been used to treat people with Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD). Our hand cream is particularly helpful during the long winter months when so many people need it for chapped skin.

Well-documented research into the benefits of shea butter and essential oils form the basis for all of our formulations. Check out NeroliRose.com for more detailed descriptions of each product.

Is Your Child Bathing in Formaldehyde or 1,4 Dioxane? http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/06/09/is-your-child-bathing-in-formaldehyde-or-14-dioxane/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/06/09/is-your-child-bathing-in-formaldehyde-or-14-dioxane/#comments Tue, 09 Jun 2009 20:48:44 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/wordpress/?p=128 Educated parents check ingredients carefully before buying products for their children to make sure they don’t contain harmful chemicals such as phalates, dyes and sodium lauryl sulfate. But did you know there are dangerous carcinogens in child care products that aren’t listed as ingredients, such as 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde?

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency reassessed 1,4-dioxane and concluded that it is more potent than the EPA originally thought in 1990. The greatest risk stems from low-level inhalation by workers exposed to the chemical, according to the EPA.

So why isn’t 1,4 dioxane listed as an ingredient? Because it is a byproduct that is produced when cosmetic chemicals are processed with ethylene oxide, an ingredient that softens the irritating effects of soap. Similarly, formaldehyde is a byproduct of certain preservatives as well, so it too, is not listed as an ingredient.

Unlike Europe and Canada, the United States does not restrict the use of formaldehyde, 1,4 dioxane or most other harmful chemicals found in personal care products. In addition, U.S. law doesn’t require manufacturers to remove toxic byproducts, according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. When young children are repeatedly exposed to chemicals, small exposures add up. It is up to consumers to know what’s safe and what isn’t and be able to read between the lines.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says common ingredients likely to be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane are PEG-100 stearate, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene and ceteareth-20. Ingredients likely to lead to the production of formaldehyde are quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea.
