20 Ways to Diminish Your Risk for Breast Cancer http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/05/20-ways-to-diminish-your-risk-for-breast-cancer/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/10/05/20-ways-to-diminish-your-risk-for-breast-cancer/#comments Tue, 06 Oct 2009 01:00:12 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=433 Recent studies suggest there is a link between breast cancer and chemicals found in commonly used beauty products for our hair, bodies and skin. Mammary cells are particularly vulnerable to these chemicals, including preservatives known as parabens—ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben, which tend to lodge in the fatty tissue in our bodies. These chemicals, along with many others, mimic the body’s natural hormones, disrupting our endocrine system.

Researchers believe that people who develop breast cancer are more susceptible to a complex interplay of factors, including radiation and chemicals that copy natural estrogen in the body. Only a small number of women who develop breast cancer have inherited the genes for cancer.

In addition to getting yearly mammograms, regular exercise and eating a balanced diet high in grains and organic fruits and vegetables, experts recommend 20 ways to diminish your risk for developing breast cancer. One way is to familiarize yourself with harmful ingredients in body care products so you’ll know what to avoid. Other suggestions include cooking with stainless steel pots and pans and avoiding many commonly used lawn care weed killers. For more information, click here.

Lead on Your Lips http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/lead-on-your-lips/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/lead-on-your-lips/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 20:09:20 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=414 Would you use lipstick that contained lead? Probably not. Lead in your bloodstream is not safe at any level, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Yet, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently found high levels of lead in all 20 lipsticks it tested. Three popular brands had the highest levels, but the FDA won’t name them.

“Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as lowered IQ, reduced school performance and increased aggression,” says Dr. Sean Palfrey, a professor or pediatrics and public health at Boston University and the medical director of Boston’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. “Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development.”

We know that what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream. Multiply that by the amount of times women reapply their lipstick and there’s cause for concern. Scientists say lead builds up in the body, causing significant levels of exposure.

The consumer advocacy group, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), first sounded the alarm about lead in lipstick in 2007, when it conducted an independent test that found the toxin in several brands it tested. The FDA’s most recent findings revealed that these lead levels are actually higher than the CSC originally reported. In response to the FDA’s recent findings, CSC says it cannot make any recommendations about lipsticks to use.

Lead appears to be a byproduct produced by certain colorants in lipstick. It is not an actual ingredient, so it’s not something you can check for by reading a list of ingredients on the labels. In 2007, CSC listed three brands whose products had the highest levels of lead—L’Oreal, Maybelline and Cover Girl. Until further details are made clear, CSC suggests that women wear lipstick only on special occasions and that pregnant women and young girls be particularly careful about using it.

What is Aromatherapy? http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/what-is-aromatherapy/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/09/17/what-is-aromatherapy/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 18:43:33 +0000 admin http://www.nerolirose.com/?p=410 Aromatherapy is a 5,000 year-old system of healing that uses the essences of plants or essential oils. These oils are chemical compounds that are essential to the life and function of plants—they protect them from predatory animals, the weather and other environmental threats, which is why they are so potent. The compounds in essential oils are very small and complex—smaller than those in pharmaceuticals—which enable them to pass through the skin and through the lungs into the bloodstream quickly. When inhaled, they stimulate the limbic system of the brain that influences emotions and memory.

The therapeutic value of essential oils lies in their purity. Most of what is on the market is synthetic and without any therapeutic value. But pure oils have significant value. Many have been studied in university laboratories around the world. Citrus oils such as orange, lemon and lime have been shown to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Cinnamon and clove oils can kill strep and staph on contact. Lavender has been shown to regenerate tissue.

Neroli Rose relies on this body of data—both scientific and anecdotal to guide us in the formulation of products. We use only therapeutic-grade oils that are extracted from plants that are organically or ethically grown. In addition to using essential oils, Neroli Rose uses a rare and exceptionally hydrating shea butter from Southern Sudan. This shea butter is handmade, using an ancient cold-pressed method that preserves the many vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants found in it. Shea butter, called “lulu,” is a food staple for the Sudanese people and is regarded as life preserving and affirming—new babies are anointed with it.

Scientists hired by the Lulu Life Cooperative based in Nairobi, Kenya have studied our Sudanese shea butter and have documented it nutritional value.

We believe the combination of Sudanese shea butter and therapeutic–grade essential oils make up the finest all-natural moisturizers in the world. They are virtually the only creamy, moisturizing and healing skin care products made without any petrochemicals, water or alcohol.

Our S-Cream for Stretch Marks and Scars, for example, contains many ingredients that heal and regenerate the skin—sea buckthorn oil, rosehip seed oil, mandarin and myrrh. In aromatherapy, these oils comprise a potent synergistic blend. The shea butter, high in Vitamin A is also exceptionally healing to the skin.

Crisp and Clean Hand Cream contains grapefruit, bergamot, geranium and sandalwood oils that are anti bacterial. Grapefruit also has an uplifting aroma, which has been used to treat people with Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD). Our hand cream is particularly helpful during the long winter months when so many people need it for chapped skin.

Well-documented research into the benefits of shea butter and essential oils form the basis for all of our formulations. Check out NeroliRose.com for more detailed descriptions of each product.

Beauty Exfoliants That Destroy Marine Life http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/03/20/beauty-exfoliants-that-destroy-marine-life/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/03/20/beauty-exfoliants-that-destroy-marine-life/#comments Fri, 20 Mar 2009 20:56:56 +0000 admin http://www.thegardendiva.com/wordpress/archives/42 Before you purchase an exfoliant to scrub away dead skin cells from your face or body, examine what those little granules are actually made of. Check to see if they’re tiny plastic particles and if they are, understand that they’ll probably end up in the ocean to be ingested by birds, fish or marine organisms.

But that’s not the end of the problem because small pieces of plastic absorb high levels of toxins in the environment, according to scientists interviewed by the Canadian publication, the Manitoban. The scientists say the tinier the particle is, the more poisonous it becomes.

The same holds true for how that particle makes its way up the food chain. It goes like this: One fish eats the plastic particle and is eaten by a larger fish, which is eaten by an even larger fish. The problem is that bioaccumulation takes place, which means the level of toxicity grows. By the time a whale digs in, the original poison is far more toxic than it was in the beginning.

How long does it take for a tiny piece of plastic to degrade? No one seems to be able to answer that, according to experts interviewed by the Manitoban. Large pieces of plastic are very resistant to degradation as we know from seeing photos of an enormous trash vortex located in the Pacific Ocean. Why should we expect small pieces of plastic to take less time?

The good news is that consumers can control the problem by not buying products made with tiny plastic beads or polyethylene. Instead, purchase natural exfoliants made from seeds, beans or sugar.

What is an Essential Oil? http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/03/16/what-is-an-essential-oil/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/03/16/what-is-an-essential-oil/#comments Mon, 16 Mar 2009 16:35:15 +0000 admin http://www.thegardendiva.com/wordpress/archives/38 Essential Oils

Many ingredients in Neroli Rose products are essential oils—aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from flowers, trees, roots, bushes, shrubs and seeds. These are nature’s chemical defense systems. They protect plants from attacks by animals and ensure their survival.

Essential oils are not greasy and do not clog pores the way vegetable oils do. They have medicinal properties that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses, diminish pain and heal inflamed, dried, scarred or blemished skin. The oils can stimulate nerves and the regeneration of tissue. By penetrating the body at the cellular level, they carry nutrition and oxygen to the cells. Their fragrances stimulate the brain and help balance moods.

The chemical structure of essential oils is similar to that of human cells and tissues. After oils are applied to the skin they travel throughout the body in minutes. An individual oil consists of hundreds of different chemical compounds. The oils are much more concentrated and potent than dried herbs. Because of their complexity, essential oils do not disturb the body’s natural balance. Individual oils can exert many beneficial effects simultaneously. For example, orange oil, which is very high in limonene, has been found to reduce depression, protect the skin from wrinkles, stimulate the circulatory system and combat the growth of tumors. Orange oil has been studied for its cancer-fighting abilities.

History is filled with references to the power of essential oils. Judeo-Christian texts mention their uses and benefits. Ancient Egyptians used them for purification and embalming the dead. During WW II, when modern antibiotics were unavailable, French doctors who relied on essential oils to save the lives of soldiers injured in battle, documented their findings.

The proper cultivation and distillation of essential oils is key to their potency. Neroli Rose uses reputable suppliers who can verify that their oils are either certified organic, wild-crafted or ethically grown—meaning they are grown without herbicides and fertilizers. Our suppliers can also verify that their oils are properly distilled. Aromatherapy, the study and use of essential oils, is well established and regulated in Europe. Numerous scientific and peer-reviewed studies conducted at universities around the world support the growing body of evidence that documents the power and usefulness of essential oils.

Are Your Beauty Products Toxic? Avoid These Seven Ingredients http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/02/08/are-your-beauty-products-toxic-avoid-these-seven-ingredients/ http://www.nerolirose.com/2009/02/08/are-your-beauty-products-toxic-avoid-these-seven-ingredients/#comments Mon, 09 Feb 2009 03:02:12 +0000 admin http://www.thegardendiva.com/wordpress/archives/17 The following ingredients are the most dangerous ones found in personal care products, according to the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research and advocacy organization. Always check labels before purchasing products and avoid the ones with these nasty chemicals.

  1. Placenta extracts—Found in hair care products. They give the body an unnecessary dose of hormones.
  2. Mercury or Thimerosal—Believe it or not, mercury is still used in some cosmetics, including mascara and eye drops. Mercury can masquerade under the word, thimerosal, a mercury preservative.
  3. Lead or Lead Acetate—The government demanded that lead be removed from gasoline and house paint but not hair dye, often black hair dye for men.
  4. Hydroquinone skin lighteners—Avoid skin lighteners that contain hydroquinone, a bleaching chemical that can cause a skin disease called, ochronosis, which results in irreversible blue-black lesions that turn into black bumps all over the skin. Ingredients with the word, Tocopheryl, Tocopherol or Tocophersolan potentially contain hydroquinone.
  5. Phthalates—These plasticizer chemicals are known as endocrine disruptors because they can affect the balance of hormones in the body, such as sperm damage in boys and infertility. Pregnant women should be particularly careful about avoiding these chemicals. Many popular brands of nail polish contain dibutyl phalate. The term “fragrance” is often used to hide the use of phalates, since companies are not required to disclose the ingredients that make up their fragrances.
  6. Petroleum Byproducts—Did you know the same factories making gas for your car also make emollients for your face cream? Many contain cancer-causing impurities such as 1,4-dioxane, found in baby shampoos, or coal tar used in scalp treatment shampoos.
  7. Nanoparticles—Many of these tiny ingredients are untested and can slide up the optic nerve to the brain or lodge inside red blood cells. The most troublesome of these is nano zinc oxide, a sunscreen that appears to pose the highest health risk when it’s in powders or sprays as opposed to lotions.
